About WorkCompByState

WorkCompByState explains U.S. workers’ compensation rules for small business owners in plain English. Workers’ comp is set state by state, and the official rules are spread across statutes and agency websites written for lawyers. This site pulls the parts a small employer needs into one place and links to the official source behind each answer.

Who runs it

The site is an independent project run by Kevin Garcia de Paz from Spain. Kevin is not an insurance agent, broker or attorney, and the site is not affiliated with any government agency or insurance company.

What you will find here

  • State guides for 20 states, each checked against that state’s statutes and agency pages, with the sources listed and the date they were last checked.
  • A 50-state comparison of who must carry coverage.
  • Explainers on exemptions, penalties, independent contractors, premiums and claims.
  • Industry guides for businesses such as construction, roofing, landscaping, restaurants and trucking.

How the content is checked

  • Facts about requirements and penalties come from state statutes and official agency pages, which are linked in each article.
  • Where a figure could not be confirmed in an official source, it is left out instead of guessed.
  • State guides are reviewed when a law changes and at least once a year.
  • The site does not sell insurance, does not take payments from insurers for content and does not use affiliate links.
